The sudden passing
of American dancer and DJ DJ Twitch, real name Stephen Boss, surprised us
yesterday. It got us wondering why people with seemingly ideal lives would take
their own lives.
He was dancing by a
Christmas tree with his family two days before he killed himself. Why did he do
it, then?
Depression is a
mental condition, not only a mood. Similar to how a person with cancer has
cancerous cells in their body that could kill them if left untreated, a person
with depression has suicidal thoughts that could ultimately result in their
death.
WHY DOES DEPRESSION OCCUR?
Psychosocial and
physiological factors both appear to have a key role in the development of
depression.
A depressed episode
or increased susceptibility to depression might be caused by negative life
experiences. Negative ideas about oneself and the environment contribute to and
maintain depressive symptoms.
The release of one
or more naturally occurring neurotransmitters in the brain, especially
norepinephrine and serotonin, is improperly controlled, but this is not the
main biological cause. It is believed that some depressive patients have lower
concentrations or less activity of these chemicals in the brain, which may be
the cause of their melancholy disposition.
WHY DO SOME WHO APPEAR TO BE LIVING HAPPY LIVES
COMMIT SUICIDE?
1. PREVIOUS TRAUMA
Despite the fact
that things are better now, they could still be affected by prior trauma in the
present.
2. THEY EXPERIENCE UNFAVORABLE AND BOTHERSOME
THOUGHTS
They may be having
intrusive, depressing thoughts that tell them they are not good enough, that
there is no hope, or that things will never get better.
3. THEY EXPERIENCE ISOLATION AND
MISUNDERSTANDING
Even having
companions around, some people may experience loneliness. It's possible that
they feel broken on the inside but have to be tough for their friends and
family, and everyone perceives them as a strong friend or tower of strength.
DEALING WITH DEPRESSION
1. EXPRESS YOURSELF TO SOMEONE.
Share your suicidal
and depressing thoughts with your loved ones so they can help you by
encouraging you and removing damaging justifications.
2. CONSULT A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL
The chemical
imbalance in your brain can be corrected with therapy and prescription
medicines.
3. PURSUE YOUR HAPPINESS.
Try to have fun to
help a melancholy thinking fade away. Consider what would make you happy right
now, then do it.
